Latest update : 17 December 2019.
Nathalie Vignier is the tenth generation of her family to grow grapes in Champagne and the sixth in her village of Cramant. In team with her family friend Sebastian Nickel, their substantial estate spans 16.5 hectares, planted exclusively to chardonnay in Cramant, Oiry and Chouilly and the Coteaux du Sézannais. Vines date from as far back as 1950 and are tended today without herbicides or insecticides. These are generous champagnes, built around ripe fruit, vinified in stainless steel vats (...)
continueLes Aspres 2017 **
Tenacious, Pierre Cros pins two stars and one more “coup de coeur” to his list of achievements, thanks to this high-end, pure Syrah aged for long time in barrels. Smoke, spices, black olives, black fruit, truffle and cocoa, the nose fascinates. Fleshy, concentrated, with finely carved tannins and nice grip, its taste impresses by volume, structure and the body of its spicy and vanilla fruit that still bears the imprint of oak wood. To age for years, certainly, but (...)
This wine for laying down, from the still little-known Sézannais region, bears an artistic label that speaks volumes about its contents. It is a particularly inspired wine from this innovative small company, run by Nathalie Vignier.
J.Vignier is based in Cramant, a Côte des blancs commune with legendary Grand Cru sites. It might seem like treason to present a wine from the Sézannais on these pages, but J.Vignier stands for creativity, inspiration, originality and authenticity. We aim to (...)
Minervois Vieilles Vignes 2016
A hundred-year-old Carignan, bottled as a single vineyard selection, is the origin of this “magic potion”, which brings the winemaker his 10th “Coup de Coeur” in our wine guide. Our tasters have taken a lot of time to study the beguiling scent of cassis, spices, hints of vanilla and flowers. The well-controlled tannin extraction and perfect barrel ageing bring in some roasted notes, which combine well with the light aroma of plum eau-de-vie. Its soft, silky (...)
Cahors Extra Libre 2016
A fine perfume of cassis, blackberries and blueberries mixed with yellow peach and mango. A touch of iris and daffodil flowers gives the wine an elegant, floral character. On the palate, it is a true delicacy: fresh fruit juice from the nose-scented fruits, enriched with lemon peel and white pepper. Playful tannins make the fruits even crisper, changing the palate into an explosion of fresh fruits, quenching the thirst of the deeply impressed taste buds. An extremely (...)
The 2015 Gigondas Aux Lieux Dits (75% Grenache, 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, and 5% Cinsault) offers classic notes of garrigue, ripe cherry and strawberry fruits, and lavender to go with a medium-bodied, elegant, Burgundian-like texture. Drink it on release and over the following decade.
The 2015 Gigondas Clos Derrière Vieille (80% Grenache and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre) comes from the wall vineyard located just beside the village. It offers terrific notes of dusty earth, dried (...)
NUMBER 2: J. Vignier 2008 Millésime Brut
Says sommelier Alicia Kemper, who is the wine director at Fundamental LA: “Nathalie Vignier is a 10th-generation winemaker in Champagne, and a 6th-generation maker in Cramant (a Grand Cru village). Her grandfather, Paul LeBrun, had 2 hectares in the early 20th century and became one of the very first independent vignerons after World War I. She has kept the pioneer spirit alive and creates wine that is full of energy, and she has many little (...)
You should forget the out-dated image of furry Cahors wines scratching the palate ... Modern Cahors is a true charmer. Malbec gives us wonderful wines on this complex terroir. In good hands it makes full and harmonious, but above all tasty wines!
Château du Cèdre 2011
Beautiful fragrance of red and black fruits, as well as spicy notes. Well-integrated tannins and completely controlled power. Velvety texture, harmonious.
Battle Château Pineraie vs. Château du Cèdre
Two wines from Cahors ready (...)
Château du Cèdre 2014(93 points)
Spicy black-currant aromas on the nose and intense juicy black fruit on the dense palate. The rich, generous layers of fruit perfectly balance the tannins that build up to a harmonious whole.
#57 at Top 100 Wine Enthusiast 2017
Le Cèdre Cahors 2014(94 points)
Bursting with juicy ripe berry fruit and with firm background tannins. Its great fruitiness is contrasted with the strength of those tannins and with its concentration.
GC Cahors 2014(95 points)
With its (...)
Champagne J.Vignier – Les Longues Verges
A bouquet offering particular transparency and purity, with discreet green melon notes and a hint of golden fruit, immensely transparent and airy on the palate, with almost extreme minerality, slender but very long; we have rarely tasted so much terroir in a sparkling wine. Impressive!
Champagne J.Vignier – Silexus Sézannensis
In transparent, mineral and decidedly straightforward style, reticent, slender and long, offering impressive personality; (...)
